Fr\u00e4nk, how did your journey with the Future start?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cMy journey with The Future began about eight years ago. I had just left my previous start-up at the time, where I focused on securing funding and sales, among other things. When I left there, I asked myself: What am I actually good at? One of the things that often went well in my previous role was applying for grants. Based on that idea, I started The Future as a grant consultancy. In the early years, I collaborated extensively with the TU\/e \u200b\u200bInnovation Lab. During that period, I helped develop projects worth around 70 million euros. About half of that was funded through grants, and half of that grant went to the TU\/e. That was a very strong collaboration, which led to many follow-up assignments and gave me the space to further expand the organisation<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes The Future different from other grant consultants?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cPerhaps it is good to illustrate this with an experience I had in the early years, when I worked extensively for TU\/e \u200b\u200band other parties. At the time, we submitted quite a few standalone grant applications\u2014applications that aligned well with the scheme and in which we were often successful. For example, we submitted fifteen OPZuid applications, twelve of which were awarded. In themselves, of course, these are great results! But what struck me is that after the conclusion of such a three-year project, when the grant ends, the collaboration and project results often slowly disappear as well. There is no inherent continuity then. And we felt that was a shame. At the same time, you see that as a society we are dealing with enormous societal challenges in areas such as sustainability, digitalisation, health, you name it. There are a tremendous number of parties working hard on these, but they often still do so from their own organisational perspective. Yet it is precisely these complex issues that call for systems thinking and collaboration that transcends organisational boundaries. And that is exactly what we focus on at The Future. Instead of starting with the opening of a grant scheme, we start with strategy formulation. Together with our partners, we build roadmaps and create a shared future perspective. Based on that shared course, we then determine the necessary steps, and those steps form the projects for which we apply for funding. In this way, we ensure that collaboration does not end after a single project, but that parties truly work together over a longer period to solve major societal challenges. Driving that cross-organisational collaboration is what makes The Future fundamentally different.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

What is a good example of your ecosystem approach in practice?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cA great example of what we are currently working on is our role within the Circular Construction program, where we are the theme leader on the topic of raw materials and materials hubs. Originally, we were asked if we could develop four grant projects from The Future. Instead of immediately getting started with individual applications, we proposed first conducting a broader market exploration. We started by developing a roadmap together with all relevant stakeholders in the Southern Netherlands. This allows us to create an overview of where the needs and opportunities lie, and from there, we determine together which projects are truly necessary and how we can develop them jointly. What we are currently doing within Circular Construction, therefore, goes much further than just guiding grant applications. We also actively drive collaboration, thematic in-depth study, and build a sustainable collaborative ecosystem. It involves connecting parties around a shared goal and creating structural cooperation that goes beyond a single project or scheme.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What does it mean for you to operate as an ecosystem builder?<\/span><\/h2>\n

“It is a fundamental shift in how we view our work. Instead of submitting an application and being done with it, we remain involved in the development of the project, the partners, and the direction. It requires much more vision, coordination, and leadership. But it also yields significant returns: projects that land better, make more impact, and actually bring about change. For our clients, it means they receive not only funding but also a substantive network and strategic guidance. And for our people, it means their work becomes more substantive and meaningful. So, we are not just building projects, but also people, networks, and knowledge structures.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

What is your ambition for the future of The Future?<\/span><\/h2>\n

“In the coming years, we aim to further expand our strategic approach and apply it to other domains. That is where our ambition lies: broadening our ecosystem-driven approach to multiple societal themes, because we believe that collaboration is precisely what makes the difference. Our ambition is to double the team to around fifteen to twenty experienced employees. With that team, we want to work together on impactful projects that truly contribute to societal change. We are building an organisation that offers full-service support: from developing strategies and drafting grant applications, to shaping projects and providing support during implementation.”\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Finally, what advice would you give yourself if you could step back eight years in time?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cIt will be fine. As a young entrepreneur, you worry constantly: Do I have enough work? Do I have enough good people to execute it? What about the cash flow? And that drains energy. You are responsible, also for your team. But when I look back, I know that on Monday morning, I always found a solution to the problem that was still a burden on Friday. Trust in yourself and in your process is crucial. You often can’t even remember everything you worried so much about back then. That is entrepreneurship: learning, growing, and trusting that you can handle it.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
