The construction sector faces major challenges. Responsible for 40% of global CO₂ emissions, 50% of material consumption, and 35% of all waste, a shift to circular construction is essential. Our cross-border project, Circular Materials Network, is focused on driving this transformation. Its goal? To create a circular and sustainable model for the construction sector that reduces CO₂ emissions, promotes material reuse, and unlocks economic opportunities. 

What Does the Project Do?

The Circular Materials Network focuses on the following key objectives: 

• Mapping innovations: We are developing an accessible “menu” of the most promising circular construction solutions. 

• Validation and testing: Innovations will be tested in real-life pilot projects, such as those implemented by housing corporations and social housing organizations, to assess their practical feasibility. 

• Scaling and connecting: By fostering collaboration between partners in Flanders and the Netherlands, we aim to accelerate the adoption of circular innovations and share knowledge across a broad network. 

This project combines innovation, sustainability, and economic opportunities. Through this approach, we aim to create a future-proof housing stock that is both circular and cost-effective.

Collaboration between Flanders and the Netherlands offers unique benefits. While Flanders is a leader in circularity, the Netherlands provides scale advantages due to its large housing corporation sector. By pooling our strengths, we can validate innovations faster, share knowledge effectively, and establish a leading role in circular construction across Europe.
