Research into a total solution for the entire Metal Power chain

A thrilling step,” describes Raoul Voeten from Metalot regarding the new feasibility study into the Metal Power chain that Metalot is conducting.

“We are now really looking at how we can create societal impact and what business model can be offered with the technical solutions that are already available.”

Thanks to the approval of the Top Sector Energy subsidy application, Metalot, together with regional project partners ZEnMO Simulations, ZLTO, Team SHIFT, SPIE Nederland, Blue Turtle Development, and the Sustainable STOER Foundation, can begin research into a total solution for the entire Metal Power chain. In this chain, iron powder is burned without CO₂ emissions, releasing energy that can be used in households, industry, or for electricity generation. This burned iron powder can be converted back into iron powder suitable for combustion using renewable energy.

For this research, we are no longer looking at the individual devices in the chain but at how the overall picture would fit into society,” says Raoul. “The Metal Power chain can offer freedom and independence for local energy cooperatives or industry and presents interesting opportunities for reducing congestion issues, facilitating the energy transition for cluster 6 companies, and ensuring energy security for built environments.”

The Future has been involved in Metalot’s projects since day one.

“It’s great that I don’t have to explain what iron powder is and that The Future contributes to the transition from a technical innovation to applications for the benefit of society.

The Future supported the definition, writing, and submission of the application to Top Sector Energy. Luuk Rousseau from The Future was involved in the application:

To move from technology push to market pull, the logical step was to look at the overall chain, analyze its impacts and challenges, and present them. And, importantly, to identify the first realization opportunities with the partners. That’s why we, as Metalot, decided to submit this application with the project partners to kickstart the implementation in society.”

A thrilling and significant step, as the solution that the Metal Power chain can provide for our society in the energy transition is absolutely worth it.”

“Subsidies from Top Sector Energy exist for innovations like the Metal Power chain—innovations that help accelerate the energy transition while keeping it affordable and reliable. This feasibility study contributes to that, and we are also very curious about the final result.
